Dave Winchester wins Arica Challenge 2010

Australian Dave Winchester was crowned champion of the Arica Chilean Challenge 2010 on Sunday. With a sensational performance Dave beat Amaury Laverhne, capturing his first victory on IBA World Tour. With a perfect 10 and 9.75, Dave was almost unbeatable, scoring 19.75 points out of possible 20 and picking up 2000 points on IBA World Ranking in the process.

Final day conditions were perfect with 6-8 feet waves. In the last heat of ACC 2010 Dave showed all of his style & power. On his second wave, Dave did a huge aerial reverse that earned him 9.75 of the judges, leaving Amaury in combination situation. However, the best was yet to come.

"Last year I was third and I want to win here. This is my first victory on tour and this is very special. I was competing like it was a free surf. I missed the first event in Pipeline, which was also a Grand Slam, so now I'll have to run to enter in title race", said Winchester.   

In second place Amaury Lavehrne received 1720 points and still in first position on IBA World Ranking. This was Amaury´s second final in a Grand Slam event in 2010.   

Now we're heading for Peru!

The big stories, though, for round four of the men’s pro division were Jared Houston (SAF) and 2x world champion Damian King (AUS). In heat five of round four, Jared Houston was sitting third in his heat and facing elimination. With less than a minute remaining, Jared scored a 7.25 propelling him into the lead as well as into the next round! The first major upset of the day would come two heats later, in heat seven, when Damian King was eliminated from competition by the three Brazilians in his heat.

Kingy wins Soldiers Beach Pro 2010

International Bodyboarding has made a massive return to Australia for the Soldiers Beach Pro Presented by Beachin-Surf. The event was the first IBA sanctioned event for nearly three years after the Human Shark Island Challenge dropped off the circuit in 2008. The final was two times World Champion Damian King from Australia (Port Macquarie) versus the up and coming South African Jared Houston. Both King and Houston have been in phenomenal form so far in 2010 with both making it through to the Pipeline Pro final in February. In Kings road to the top he knocked out the following riders, Ryan Hardy, Mark Parsons, Jorge Colomer, Joe Clarke and Michael Novy. Whilst Houston's scalps included Ben Player, Nathan Branch, Dan Worsley, Sam Bennett and Amaury Laverhne. As expected both King and Houston came out firing, both launching into waves in the opening seconds of the heat. King took the early lead with a 6.60, however Houston came back with a quick 5.17 and 6.63. The lead changed back and forth right through out the first fifteen minutes of the final, with a barrage of Air Rolls Spins and flips from both the Aussie and South African. However, Kings experience with using the priority system as conditions slowed down in the back fifteen minutes saw him eventually taking him the final, by a mere .67 points. King put together a combined wave total of 12.77 over Jared Houston's 12.10. "I am feeling really good, it wasn't the action packed final that I was hoping for but I am still stoked" said Damian. "I just had to play a smart heat to beat Jared today. Damian has just returned to competitive bodyboarding in the past twelve months after taking a well deserved break, but admits it has been a tough road back to the top. "I didn't think that I was going to win the event today, Jared has been surfing really well. "A few years ago I was just 'competitioned out', but with the help of some new and better sponsorship deals I have been able to get right back into it. "I really want to give a massive shout out to Jared, twelve months ago I hadn't heard of him and now he's coming second in world tour events". The second for Houston backs up his third place at Pipeline, putting him in a prime position to take a shot at the 2010 World Title. "I am feeling really good. I am so stoked to be in the third final this year and I hope to keep it up in the next South American leg of the tour". Said Jared "My equipment at the moment is really good so I am feeling really confident for the next part of the tour. Hopefully I can do well in Brazil, Chile and Peru". Finishing in equal third place were Amaury Laverhne of the Reunion Islands and Michael Novy of Australia. Amaury was pleased with the result as he sets up his 2010 World Title campaign. "I am actually really happy with this result, my main aim going into this competition was to make the semi finals". Said Amaury. "I was feeling really relaxed in my last heat, however I stupidly lost priority twice and Jared was surfing really well so it wasn't the time to be making mistakes". International General Manager Terry McKenna was ecstatic with the result and welcomes international bodyboarding back to Australia. "This event has been the perfect platform for the IBA to re-launch in Australia". Said McKenna "We look forward to being back in the Wyong Shire for the event next year, plus we are currently in negotiations with local governments around Australia to secure a Grand Slam event in one of Australia's many waves of consequence". I've had the pleasure of meeting Shane from Video Surf Guide in recent times. Shane is currently living in London with his wife Lindsay. While getting to know Shane I realized that he is a very good hearted guy and willing to help other people where ever he can. You also realize that Shane misses the ocean a lot as he comes from East London,a coastal town on the East Coast of South Africa. I then decided, why not do an interview and let the man speak for himself? Shane happily agreed to answer some of my questions below... Howzit Shane tell us where you from bro? I'm from East London. Known as 'Slummies' to some, but I think it's an awesome place. How long have you been bodyboarding? About 17 or 18 years... Tell us a bit about your missions and travels? Well, up until quite recently I hadn't traveled all that much except for a bit around SA. My girl and I are in London now and we recently did a trip to Scotland where I got some mad waves. Are you looking to travel in the near future? We're planning a pretty big trip soon before we come home to SA. If finances and visas allow we'll be hitting the USA, Oz, Indo and the Philippines. Then, if there's any cash left we'd like to do the SA coast for a while... tell us about your favourite spot in SA? My mates and I know a bunch of great spots around EL and I have a few favourites. Probably my best though, is a spot called Sarcasms that doesn't work very often, but when it does it's stupid good!! It needs pretty big swell, a specific tide and the right swell direction so it's tough to get it when it's on... and your favourite spot internationally? Probably the same spot, but I surfed some sick spots in Scotland. Tell me about your worst wipeout...Where did it happen? At this spot called Gashers. It's flippin heavy slab with a full-on dry rock ledge about 5-10 metres in front of where the lip lands so there are proper consequences if you don't make the barrel or if you get sucked over the falls. I went out one day when it was probably the best I've ever seen it and I thought I'd pick off a small one to get into the surf. It's a serious wave so you need your mind right :) Anyway, I rode the small one and when I pulled of the back the lip caught my feet and sucked me over. My feet hit the reef and the lip launched me towards the dry ledge in front. My head got slammed into a sharp section with barnacles all over. I got 4 stitches in my ear and 3 in my neck and missed the sickest waves - that's what hurt the most I think :) I also got bumped my a shark when I was 16 - that was stupid scary, but I as unscathed so it doesn't really count as I wipeout I reckon. Tell us about your website Video Surf Guide? I started the site because my girl and I were planning to travel a lot and I thought it would be a good way for guys to check out a location before they spend their hard-earned cash on a trip. We'll see how it goes... Who is your role model? who inspired you during your career as a bodyboarder? In life - Jesus is my role model. People thought He was crazy, but He stuck to His guns. He's really inspirational to me. In bodyboarding I'd say my mates have always been the guys that pushed me the most and kept me in the water. There have been some seriously good riders from EL over the years, but none of us have ever really been into contests so ou's names never really get out there. I'm not sure if anyone would have heard of a guy called Jacob Reeves, but he was around a few years back and he was mental good! I dug him a lot... It's also sick to see SA ou's like Mark McCarthy and Spex doing well! They're both such nice guys too... What gear do you ride at the moment? I'm not sponsored at all. I have a Science Customs board from Al Taylor and a Cartel board. I've used Churchill's forever because I have caveman feet that are too wide for any other fins - still have some Makapuu's. I think I might try some Stealth or Limited Edition fins out when I get to Oz though. I have an O'neill wetsuit. I use Prestik in my ears.. :D How do you see bodyboarding progressing in SA? Honestly, it's pretty dead in EL and I don't know much about the rest of SA so in my mind it's a bit gloomy. I really can't understand why the sport is so stunted though. I flippin love it! Surely heaps of other people should too? hahaha... The ou's at sixty/40 are doing such a mental good job though and that gives me a lot of hope. Factory 7 also really support the sport so I reckon they deserve support in return. The SABA guys have always worked super hard too so that's really encouraging too. I think industry plays a big part though. If ou's would support brands who seriously support the sport we would see real growth, but surf brands get all the revenue from boogers buying clothing etc so when that gets sorted we'll see real growth I reckon. Any words of wisdom for the young and aspiring bodyboarder? Just keep loving it and doing it because you love it! Bodyboarding might not be as 'cool' as surfing, but at least the sport isn't flooded with posers You got some last words? I've just got to say that my wife is just too much! I don't know many guys who's chicks would cruise around the world with them and point a video camera at them while they surf - and never complain about it. Soldiers Beach Pro 2010

The 2010 Soldiers Beach Pro presented by Beachin’ Surf will be the 2nd event on the 2010 IBA World Men’s Tour and will also be dual sanctioned as an IBA Australian Rebel Sport Pro Tour 5 Star event. The International Bodyboarding Association World Bodyboarding Tour, is the worlds official tour and each year crowns the World Bodyboarding Champion. The NSW State titles will take place from Monday 12th April till Wednesday 14th April and will feature around 150 riders from Byron Bay to Eden. Then the IBA World Tour Men’s event will begin Thursday 15th April and conclude Sunday 18th April with a presentation at the Beachcomber Hotel. The Soldiers Beach Pro event is carrying 1000 ratings points and a cool USD$20,000 prize purse as well as 5 Star points on the IBAA Rebel Sport Pro Tour. Full story on the IBA website

The man of the day, Amaury Lavernhe came out victorious after an epic display of bodyboarding talent.

The Turbo Pipeline Pro 2010 presented by Body Glove has finally been won, with Pipeline saving the best for last with the comp ending on a high! The Banzai Pipeline was going of it's nut with perfect 8 to 12 feet Pipe and light offshore winds all day.

Amaury Lavernhe from Reunion Islands had the goods in the final with an outstanding combined wave total of 17.50, with a perfect 10 for an insane barrel to backflip. He then answered with a 7.5 for another huge barrel to roll.

"I am so stoked, I can't believe it" Said Lavernhe "I have been here for 3 weeks and I have been training for this day. "I just took this heat by heat and I didn't want to think too much about the final".

Diego Cabrera, who has come off the back of a win at the last IBA World Tour event at Confital in December has continued his stellar competitive run.

'This is my dream, I am very very happy as this is the first time that I have ever been in a pipe final and the second time in a Grand Slam final" said Cabrera.

Though Jared Houston missed out on second only by .45 points, he was thrilled with his performance in the competition after spending over 3 months on the North Shore in preparation. Originally excluded for the event due to surfing in an unsactioned bodyboarding event, Houston was the one who spearheaded the campaign to the IBA riders board to have the ban lifted at the end of 2009. "I am so stoked, this is everything that I have been working towards this year so I am so happy that it has paid off" said Houston

Terry McKenna, the IBA International General Manager, who was also one of the key drivers behind this event is thrilled with how the comp rolled out in 2010. "There was not a better way to begin the 2010 IBA World Tour season" Said Terry. "Winning this event is only second to winning the world title, I am thrilled that Amaury has won this event as he is the deserved winner".

The 2010 IBA World Tour now moved to New South Wales in Australia for the Soldier Beach Pro International from April 12 to 18.

David Hubbard wins Pipeline Pro Dropknee 2010

David Hubbard from Hawaii won The Foam Company Drop Knee Pipeline Pro contest on Thursday at the Banzai Pipeline. Hubbard is the 3-time defending world champion and showed why he is considered to be the best Dropknee rider in the world.

"He's such a good contest rider," Feast said of Hubbard. "Maybe it's the Hawaiian genetics. He's got these waves to hone his skills on and today it was perfect." - IBA

Day 2 of the Turbo Pipeline Pro presented by Body Glove served for some epic 6feet conditions. The waves did look a bit messy at times and great at others... "this means that the riders have to show there versatility to progress" said Terry McKenna the IBA General Manager who is very happy with the event so far. Apparently there is a 17 foot NW swell headed for the North Shore on Day 3. It will take another full day of surfing to conclude the event. So lets hope for some big swell and good times on Day 3.

"Hawaiian Vaj Lederman, who gained a local wild card into the event, ripped through all of his heats and was by far the stand out surfer of the day.In the round of 96 he put together a combined wave total of 16.90. This included a near perfect 10 for a huge double barrel at Backdoor" - IBA Website

Hey mate, Im from Edgemead, in Cape Town..its a not-so-close-to-the-beach little suburb that i love!

How long have you been bodyboarding?

Ah gees i reckon it must be ten years this year hey...wow times flown!!

Tell us a bit about your missions and travels?

Ive been super privilaged to have been able to travel all over S.A with the sickest group of friends...done pretty much all the West coast, vbarring a few gems we still have to wrangle, and done all the East coast wich is always a good trip with the boys.Ive also just recently been over to Oz with Jared Houston and Jarret "Pik" Johnson. was an amazing trip that really opened my eye to the potential we have in this country of ours, both with riders and the spots.

Are you looking to travel in the near future?

yeah man, im never one to just stay at home, i love being on the move the whole time so im looking to travel for sure, like i said, we've got a good few West coast trips in the pipeworks which hopefully will turn out good as well as im thinking of doing Indo in June..im just gona have to see how my funds work out. Otherwise its local trips for this year, then next year a bit of overseas travel.

What is you favourite spot in South Africa dude?

I wouldnt be able to say there's only one favourite man, we have such a selection of different kinds of waves its really sick! but my top few would definitly be The Hut, Koelbay, Tombstones, Gardens, and this recently found reef yet to be named. There's heaps of amazing places but those are my recent fav's!

....and your favourite spot across the waters?

The few spots i surfed over in Oz i would have to say The Box, Shark Island and most definitly Nuggen...i wasnt privilaged enought to score reallt good black rock, but im pretty certain that that would be my favourite from what ive seen it could do, we got it in pretty horrid conditions and it was still epic fun.

Tell us about your worst wipeout...Where did it happen?

I took one minor beating at Shark Island, i though i was going to get cut up for sure, but luckily nothing happened, just a good ol spanking. I reckon definitly my heaviest beat down was at Yzers on quite a solid day. Took a good sized one, hit the botto and drew my line for one MOTHERLESS barrel..as i pulled up i misjudged the pull of the wave and got sucked straight through the roof and taken to the bottom. One MEGA beat down happened.as i came up the next wave was on my head. took a quick breath again and the same thing happened. BEATEN. this happened about 3 times in a row. i had no air and was freaking out. luckily Mr leash didnt snap so i stil had my board and could get in safe.

I hear you are progressing in the tow out scene in SA,tell me about it?

Yeah, a good crew of us have been giving it a few tests here and there. gotten a couple of really fun ones but nothing of epic proportions...YET!there been a couple of really big airs, but nothing like we will be getting. the vision is big! its such a sick new aspect to bodyboarding that hasnt really been tested too much in S.A....the ou's over in OZ have been doing it for ages and trust me, they make it look heaps easier than it is. but that speed is so additctive!:)

Who is your role model? who inspired you during your career as a bodyboarder?

Internationally: Mitch Rawlins, Mr Winchester, Hardballs and a good few others..such charges with smooth smooooooth style!Locally: Jared Houston, Pik, Daniel Worsley, Rippers i have the privilage of watching and surfing with for many years.

What gear do you ride at the moment?

I get hooked up with some epic boards from Rossi..i have 2 at the moment, one is my custom shape and the other is the Mark Watts shape..giving both a good testing and loving them both.I have a nonfunctional wetsuit.got a pair of sweet Pency Limited Edition finsAnd Lokt_in hook me up with clothing and soon to be coming wetsuits!Loving it!!

How do you see bodyboarding progressing in South Africa?

Its growing. faster and faster. every second i look away and then look again, someones done something new. towouts. then riding dungeons. and surfing bigger heavier waves.Mr Cobus Bosman discoveing new reefs as often as we're taking breathes of air. better competions and better contest veunes. THE SA BODYBOARDING SCENE IS DEFINITLY ON THE UP AND UP! and with guys like Spex, Jerry, McCarthy and Wattsy all holding there own over in Hawaii and OZ they're all doing an amazing thing fin terms of getting our SA name out there.

Any words of wisdom for the young and aspiring bodyboarder?

Set goals. Focus on getting them. whether it be in contests or free surfing. Train hard to reach them because the reward when u get them is epic. then when u reach them, set more...and LOVE attaining them.

Any last words?

Of course..Andy Raath is chilling up in Jozi marinading chicken for a living. but he'l be back. watch this kid.Rufus is an aminal who desires so much to be a full blooded rangy..look at his hair when u see him, point, laugh, the high 5 him. He's Killing it of late!!he has big things planned for this year too so keep you eyes peeled.and Mr Jarret Johnson. he doesnt think. watch him. very closely. Hi, So,it's been a while since my last post,I really don't want to make any excuses for not posting but you know how it goes over the holiday season.

So my boy Simon Heale has hooked me up with some awesome pics from his travels to Oz. I will post these pics over time. Don't want to give away all the epic shots in one go.

A little more about Simon Heale you ask me?

Well Simon is a hardcore charger from the Cape Town on the West Coast of South Africa...He is an all round top man and a bodyboarder of note! Simon has had his fair share of victories on the SABA circuit and represents the Western Province Bodyboarding team. Simon has also had the opportunity to travel a lot over the years. A full interview with Simon Heale is in the works.

The New Guy

So I'm the new guy around here. I can still remember my first day at a new school when I was 8 years old. They were changing to a new uniform in the second term so the Headmaster told my mother to buy the new one from the outset instead of wasting cash buying the old one and the new one. So she did. And I rocked up on my first day wearing a different uniform than every other kid in the whole school! Awesome! That day was not in my top 1000 and it kinda made me not like being the new guy. But, here I am doing it all over again. But for the record, I don't feel like an outcast this time and I'm not wearing a school uniform while I write this. I'll be writing some guest posts here on Stay Inverted from time to time so I should probably introduce myself. My name is Shane Rielly and I'm from East London, on the south coast of South Africa for those of you who don't line in SA. I started bodyboarding when I was 12 and have loved it ever since. I've never had a sponsor, I surfed for my province at SA's 9 or 10 times and never got better than 16th and I don't particularly care. I've surfed insane waves and have awesome mates and know some mental spots around the East London area. Right now my girl and I are living in London in the UK. If you're wondering why - that's a very good question, but just because it's a good question doesn't mean it has an answer. Tomorrow we are going to Thurso in Scotland and hoping to score some mad waves. I just recently started a blog called Video Surf Guide where the posts will hopefully mainly be video - so I guess it's a video blog or vlog if you're into that word (I'm not!). It's worth a look I reckon and I'm actually typing this while I should be editing the first 3 videos for VSG so when I'm done there should be some new vids up soon! Nomadic Vision I really enjoyed his theory on how videographers and fotographers should rather join as a team rather than doing both diciplines yourself.It's like a conflict of interest when a fotographer does a videographers job.Rather leave each man for his job.The job he was born to do.This very true statement from Nomadic Vision can certainly build a few bridges and make you some friends. I will certainly team up with these guys in future.

As I sit here,at work,I dream!I dream of being on the West Coast...I dream of being slotted away in long clean barrels.Just as I drift into a hypnotic state of green room fever my heart starts to pound and the blood rushes to my head!I realise that its time to fly as the ramp formed by the cross section lurks infront of me,I bust!The biggest invert ever,of the sickest wave ever!My friends are shouting,applauding my efforts!It feels good!I'm the man! This is my dream.... But then I'm awakened by the rush of the office,I then realise that daydreaming is the victor!

Ruan Piesang de Bruin!!!The new kid on the block,the new WP Men's Champ,taking things to new levels!making an impact!doing what he loves!on his way to great things! These are only a few things that come to mind when you speak to Piesang and when you see the quality of his riding ability.This is when you realise that this dude is taking his personal goals and the sport of bodyboarding to newer and higher levels. I've known Piesang for a while and always noticed that he has potential,from the early days Ruan's persistance and hard training has now finally delivered the rewards!He is now on the Western Province team and on his way to SA Champs where we wish Ruan all the best and success. Ruan has also told stayinverted that he will do a season is Oz next year,I am almost certain that those ozzie kids will realise that Piesang means business!This trip will most certainly provide Ruan with the stepping stones of greatness! Just goes to show that hard work pays off in the end!

After spending some days on the West Coast i realised that when brandy gets the better of you on a Friday night,your entire weekend of fun filled activity goes down the drain!...my point is that I think mother nature payed us back after abusing our bodies like that....SHE TOOK AWAY THE WIND!!! We spent the entire day patrolling the beaches.doing winddances hoping for wind to arrive! Nothing happened!!! No wind in Langebaan is like no irretatating taxi's in the streets of Cape Town!!! So we ended up drinking again,shocked at the fact that the Springboks lost and we were unable to kitesurf!! I'm thinking of investing in a Hobie Cat!!seems like those muthafukkas need less wind! Anyway,thats my weekend dilema!peace people!

Today I'm really excited....atlast I have some good news!!! Today is the the day I will be assembling my long awaited PC. For the last week I've been scrambling around...searching for parts,getting quotes and making decisions about what is better and what is worse etc...blah blah(don't wanna bore you to death with the small things) Tonight I will unleash the beast!Ultimate speed and display is finally at feet...
